The number of British homes producing their own clean energy could multiply to one million – about one in every three - within 12 years.

Halwill Village Hall filled once again on 9th September with angry local residents to hear an update on the proposed wind farm development from the Chilla Against Turbines (C.A.T) action group.

Attendees were shown a video which demonstrated why the countryside was being plagued by such industrial developments, as the government tries to achieve unrealistic renewable energy targets.  It explained why wind turbines are neither efficient nor “green” and the cost penalties to be paid. Highlighted was the fact that each UK household is ultimately to pay for the huge £500,000 per turbine per year subsidies through increases in their gas and electricity bills, and taxes.

The presentation outlined the key facts including the possible health risks caused by noise, vibration and flicker to any household within a 2km zone (the nearest house being only some 563m away).  It also included footage showing the dangers of turbines catching fire, malfunctioning and collapsing.

C.A.T had already met with Torridge and West Devon Borough Councils to ascertain the planning process .  It was confirmed that planning permission for the powerlines/pylons to get the power to the national grid was not required, and if the 410ft turbines went ahead, these would be mandatory.

Zyg Gregorek, owner of Anglers Paradise, was a key speaker on the night. He voiced his concerns regarding the devastating effect that this development could have not only for his own business in terms of water pollution (caused by thousands of tonnes of steel and concrete in the turbine foundations – each about the size of half a football pitch, and up to 20m in depth) and sonic vibration, but also the adverse effect for both his and other local businesses who could suffer from a severe decline in tourism across the area.

The audience also learned other key facts associated with wind farms, and urged more volunteers to come forward to help with an increasing number of projects including research, fund raising and general assistance.  They are also looking to recruit a secretary and vice chairman to help build the defence case.

Roy Houghton, Chairman of C.A.T said “it was a very well attended meeting and we thank everyone for their on-going support. We have many fund raising events planned including a Family Day at Highampton on 12th October and a big fireworks party at Anglers Paradise on 31st October as we need funds to fight our legal case”.

CAT can be contacted via the website at www.chilla-against-turbines.co.uk or by ringing Alex on 01409 220136.

Post meeting note:
This meeting was so well received that C.A.T are looking at taking the message to other surrounding villages including Black Torrington, Highampton and Sheepwash who are all within the 2km zone.
